From the start of your degree, you will be supported by an experienced supervisory team who will guide your research, challenge your thinking and help you develop as an independent researcher.

Supervision at Aston is structured, supportive and tailored to your research and stage of study. As your project develops, the nature of supervision evolves too - from close guidance in the early stages to more focused academic discussion as your work becomes more advanced.

Your supervisory team

Every postgraduate research student at Aston is supported by a supervisory team, led by a primary supervisor and supported by one or more associate supervisors. This team-based approach provides continuity, subject expertise and a breadth of academic perspectives throughout your degree.

Your supervisors will support you to:

  • Develop and refine your research project
  • Build strong research design and methodology
  • Engage critically with literature in your field
  • Navigate challenges and make informed decisions
  • Prepare for key milestones, thesis submission and examination

Clear expectations around roles, responsibilities and ways of working are agreed early in your degree, helping to establish a productive and supportive supervisory relationship from the outset.

Regular guidance and feedback

You will meet with your supervisors regularly throughout your doctorate. These meetings provide opportunities to discuss progress, receive feedback, explore ideas and plan next steps.

Supervision meetings are designed to be constructive and forward-looking, helping you stay on track while also encouraging independence, critical thinking and ownership of your research.

Wider academic and pastoral support

In addition to your supervisors, you will have access to a wider academic support network within your School and the Aston Doctoral School. This includes academic leads and postgraduate research tutors who can provide guidance on research progress, training and wellbeing.

This layered support ensures that you always have someone to turn to, whether you need academic advice, pastoral support or help navigating your research journey.
