Pharmacokinetics MSc

During your time on the Pharmaceutical Sciences MSc at Aston, you'll receive specialist training in a broad range of topics such as drug discovery, drug dosage form and design, and chemotherapy and selective toxicity. The United Kingdom government has confirmed that European Union (EU), other European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals commencing academic courses in England from August 2021 will no longer be charged the same tuition rates as UK students.

Tuition fees for students are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) to take account of the University’s increased costs of delivering the Programme. Any such increase shall always be in accordance with the law. When undertaking a placement year, a placement year fee applies.

Assessment

Assessment for the Pharmacokinetics MSc programme is varied, combining coursework, exams, practical work, and both oral and written presentations. Your independent research project will be assessed through a detailed written report and an oral poster defence, reflecting real-world scientific practice.

The course carries 180 credits, with each credit representing around 10 hours of learning. These hours are delivered through a blend of lectures, seminars, tutorials, lab sessions, practicals, online learning, independent study, reading, reflecting on feedback, and where relevant, field trips and work placements—ensuring a rich and well-rounded educational experience.

Career prospects

In successful graduation, you will be equipped with extensive specialist knowledge, and the transferable skills relevant to drug discovery, drug design and drug delivery for various careers in the pharmaceutical industry. In particular, within drug metabolism pharmacokinetics (DMPK) departments, supporting the clinical transition to apply pharmacokinetic principles in clinical trials, or clinical treatment optimisation through virtual clinical trial simulations.

You will also be suitable for other opportunities such as analytical sciences, formulation development, project management, regulatory affairs and scientific writing.

In addition, for those that wish to peruse a career in academic research or academia, this course is a well-placed stepping stone for PhD study at Aston or another leading institution.

What research could I do in my final project?

Our teaching staff will work with you to develop a project that caters for your own specific training requirements, and one which is deliverable within the allotted time-frame. These can span both laboratory research, clinical research or a combination of both.

A recent example of a project examined why some patients who are drug abusers and were receiving treatment using a heroin substitute called methadone, did not respond well to treatment. Many of these patients often contract other illnesses such as tuberculosis or HIV.

This can lead to complicated drug interactions which can reduce how methadone works and can push the patients back into heroin abuse. The project explored the interaction between methadone and rifampicin (an anti-tuberculosis drug) using virtual clinical trials, and resulted in recommendations for new dosing regimens for patients who are taking these combinations of drugs. The project was run in collaboration with an external clinical collaborator and resulted in a paper being published in a high impact medical journal alongside being invited to present the work at a roundtable discussion at Public Health England (UK).

Other examples have spanned a variety of disciplines and include formulation development (transdermal formulations and optimising pharmacokinetics), tropical diseases (optimising antimalarial use in paediatrics patients), antimicrobial pharmacokinetics optimisation in children.

Projects developed on the Pharmacokinetics MSc will always be translational in nature, offering the opportunity for a tangible impact on society and healthcare.

What will I study on this course?

The course explores everything from drug design to chemotherapy and is assessed through practical learning, coursework and presentations. You’ll learn a range of important personal attributes such as presentation, negotiation and communication skills and get the opportunity to gain hands on research experience in your final project.
