Master of Business Administration

Taught stage modules

For all pathways, in the taught stage you will study the following core modules:

Strategy and Economics for Global Competitiveness Knowledge of business and corporate strategies and the ability to apply them to analyse and develop competitiveness within regional, national and global markets are core elements in being future business leaders and aspiring entrepreneurs. This module intends to help you develop these skills and competencies. The delivery requires cognisance of the rapidly evolving global landscape and the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world in which competitive and resilient strategies need to be developed. Distinctive features of the module are the link between strategy and business economics incorporated in the module, the combination of learning and doing through the flipped classroom approach, case study analyses, formative presentations and assessment linked to in-depth company case studies.	15
Financial Analysis to Drive Value This module will equip you with the skills and competences necessary critically to analyse financial data, enabling you to make informed decisions and recommendations and to communicate these effectively.	15
Strategic Marketing, Planning and Analytics This module develops your expertise within the world of strategic marketing. The module engages you with the development of the marketing concept and its importance within a real-world context. You will design and develop marketing plans within an experiential situation using appropriate marketing theories, frameworks and tools. You will learn how to conduct situational analyses, formulate suitable strategies and measure the results using appropriate metrics. You will develop and implement your marketing strategy and planning knowledge in an authentic situation which will support your future employability or entrepreneurial ambitions.	15
Operations Management Transformation This module provides a contemporary account of good practice in operations management, covering critical organisational success factors whether in manufacturing or service, large or small organisations. Themes running throughout this module are organisational, integration and digitalisation, internationalisation and globalisation, and ethical sustainability management. You will learn theories, methods, and techniques relevant to these themes. Cases and guest lecturers are used to provide context. You will become equipped to become effective strategic operations managers by acquiring relevant skills and knowledge to improve responsible environmental social governance and enterprising behaviour. Authentic assessment will be through formative group exercises (class presentations and debate) based on your experience and research. An individual summative exercise will use a practice-based simulation game with a reflective, analytical critique report).	15
Leadership for Tomorrow This module equips you to lead effectively in diverse and unpredictable environments, with a focus on responsible leadership, business resilience, equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). You will explore (un)ethical practices, ethical decision-making, and resilience strategies for disruption prevention. Through real-world case studies and experiential learning, you will develop skills in responsible leadership, managing change and crisis, and fostering sustainable practices aligned with ESG principles. The module emphasises leading diverse teams, promoting well-being, and driving responsible transformation. You will be prepared to lead with integrity, inspire resilience, and balance social, environmental, and organisational goals. This module is essential for future leaders ready to navigate a volatile, globalised world.	15
Startup Lab Aston This module aims to equip you with the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to be enterprising/ to be creative, to engage with entrepreneurial activity in collaborative contexts, and to generate positive impact. By exploring the entrepreneurial mindset, delving into the stages of the entrepreneurial process, applying design thinking and sustainability principles, and fostering collaborative teamwork, you will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to think like an entrepreneur, explore entrepreneurial activity to generate solutions for your own and others’ businesses, innovate for a sustainable future, and collaborate for impact.	15

You will have the option between five distinct and specialist pathways, allowing you to dedicate yourself to a particular area of business. The pathways are Business Management (no specialism), Cybersecurity, Healthcare, Marketing, and AI and Digital Transformation.

Taught stage optional modules:

If you opt for the Business Management pathway, you will choose one module from the first module listed on any other pathway and one module from the second module listed in any other pathway. If you choose any of the other pathways, you will complete both modules listed underneath that pathway. These are outlined below.

Entrepreneurial Strategies for Cybersecurity Due to the interconnected nature of contemporary societies and their rapid digitisation, organisations are at continuous risk to their information systems and assets. This module seeks to provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of cyber risk management and skills to critically analyse and evaluate existing practices.	15
Transformational Leadership in Cybersecurity This module equips you with in-depth knowledge to manage a red team attack, and plan penetration testing activities. (Red teaming is a group of ethical hackers who act a potential attackers and simulate cyber attacks, exploiting security weaknesses). You will learn how to coordinate penetration testing while adhering to legal and ethical standards. Skills include managing intelligence gathering, supervising technical teams, and understanding aspects of psychology. The module fosters leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills applicable to cyber security managerial roles.	15

Pathway C: Healthcare

Module title	Credits
Patient-Centred Care and Quality Improvement Healthcare systems work to meet the needs and expectations of populations, within resource constraints. Value-based healthcare is increasingly adopted as an approach to achieve this worldwide and aims to deliver outcomes that matter to patients at the lowest possible cost. The module examines the interventions that support its enactment, including the central role of measurement, process mapping, time-driven activity-based costing and the introduction of integrated practice units. Attention will also be afforded to implications for staff and the promise of value-based care in reconnecting healthcare providers to their core purpose. Through case studies, practical examples and exercises, you will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to lead and implement value-based change in healthcare organisations and systems.	15
People Management and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in Healthcare It is increasingly accepted that care of patients requires care of healthcare providers. In the context of global shortages of healthcare workers, rising workforce dissatisfaction, burnout and moral injury, this module explores health labour market, systems and organisational dynamics and levers that provide opportunities to enhance employee experiences and outcomes. The evidence base relating to the healthcare workforce is fragmented. This module draws on and consolidates international evidence and insights from disciplines including human resources for health, management, and the professions (medical, nursing, AHP etc). It also recognises the contributions of the near fifty percent of the healthcare workforce who are in user, professional and system supporting roles. The module provides evidence-informed insights into factors supporting a sustainable healthcare workforce.	15

Communications in a Digital Space Marketing communications play a vital role for organisations, however the landscape in which they operate has become increasingly fragmented and dynamic and customers are playing a greater role in content creation, particularly via digital channels. It is important for you to understand the synergies between different communication tools in order to plan, implement and evaluate campaigns.	15
Entrepreneurial Marketing and Innovation The module outlines the development of entrepreneurial marketing and its importance within a real-world context. You will develop and present a business plan using appropriate marketing theories, frameworks and tools. You will develop, implement and reflect upon your entrepreneurial planning knowledge and skills in an authentic situation which will support their future employability or entrepreneurial ambitions.	15

Pathway E: AI and Digital Transformation

AI Revolution in Business and Society This module provides you with an advanced and strategic understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) and its profound potential to reshape and innovate businesses and industries. Designed for future leaders, the course covers complex concepts in AI, machine learning, and automation, highlighting their distinctions and strategic business applications. It critically examines the theoretical frameworks, philosophical debates, and ethical dilemmas associated with AI, while focusing on innovative use cases and strategic opportunities for leveraging AI in various sectors. Through rigorous discussions, in-depth case studies, and engagement with real-world scenarios, you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to strategically implement and lead AI initiatives within your organisations.	15
Navigating Digital Transformation – Innovating for the future This module will focus on the topic of digital transformation and explore how organisations make use of the opportunity and succeed in this new environment. You will then have flexibility to choose your own focus for your own assignment, applying these concepts to an area of your choice. This flexibility is built into the module to allow you to follow the study path which is most relevant to you.	15

Innovation can aggregate value by finding more profitable ways of doing things, introducing new products or services, or optimising the quality and cost efficiency of operations. Business innovation can be very challenging. When you put creativity and managerial skills together, the innovation pieces can propel a company to new heights. This module introduces key management knowledge and practices to develop professional and interpersonal skills required for to create innovative solutions for real-life challenges, helping redefine product and service value, strengthen customer relationships, and create distinctive market space, particularly in technological and global settings.	15
Aston Edge The Aston Edge module empowers you to develop the advanced skills and strategies essential for future employment and career progression into senior leadership roles. Through a combination of interactive workshops, reflective exercises, and career management tools, you will build competencies in areas such as strategic decision-making, negotiation, and personal branding. This module prepares you to confidently navigate evolving industry demands, enhancing your leadership potential and employability in competitive, global markets.	15
MBA Consultancy Research Project Building on the foundational knowledge gained in the taught portion of the programme, this module sharpens essential high level analytical and academic skills for lifelong learning in today’s dynamic business landscape. By conducting independent research, you will gain a deeper understanding of their chosen subject and contribute to the field. Additionally, this module serves as a stepping stone for those considering further research degrees.	30

At least a 2:2 (lower second-class honours) degree or equivalent

You will need to demonstrate:

At least three years' relevant post-graduation professional/managerial experience by the time you start your programme.

You will need to provide

An official academic transcript of your grades (in English)
Two references - preferably one from an academic referee, the other from your current or previous employer; two professional references may be accepted from applicants with substantial work experience.

Interviews: successful applicants will be required to attend an online interview as part of the application process.

The duration of this programme is set out at the top of this course page and you will be responsible for the payment of an annual tuition fee in each of these years. The University reserves the right to increase tuition fees annually in accordance with its Terms and Conditions. This means that your total tuition fee may be higher than stated above, but your total tuition fee will never increase by more than 6% year on year. An increase in fees will allow the University to cover the increased costs of delivering the course and ensure it is able to maintain high standards of education and facilities.

Payment of tuition fees

You can pay your fees in full at the beginning of the programme or choose to pay in three termly instalments of 50% (term 1), 25% (term 2), and 25% (term 3). Please note your fees will vary depending on which scholarships you have been awarded.

MBA deposit payment

When you accept your place onto the Aston University MBA you will be required to pay a £5,000 deposit. This sum will be deducted from your total tuition fee amount upon enrolment.

The United Kingdom government has confirmed that European Union (EU), other European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals commencing academic courses in England from August 2021 will no longer be charged the same tuition rates as UK students.

Tuition fees for students are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) to take account of the University’s increased costs of delivering the Programme. Any such increase shall always be in accordance with the law. When undertaking a placement year, a placement year fee applies.

Assessment

Assessment has been developed to reflect the innovative action-oriented and experiential learning which are essential to create the confident leaders of tomorrow. For this reason there are no formal examinations, and we will assess whether you have met the programme learning outcomes via team assignments, individual reflection, portfolios and projects, as well as simulations, games, consultancy and real-life business challenges which have a technology and global focus.

Our assessments will challenge you to demonstrate your entrepreneurial, analytical, collaborative and leadership skills, as well as applying core academic models in real life business situations.

What will my timetable look like?

We understand how important it is to know your timetable in advance for planning around work, childcare, or other responsibilities. Here's some basic guidance on what to expect regarding your student timetable.

Full-time programmes

As a rough estimate, full-time postgraduate students in the College of Business and Social Sciences should expect to spend about 12-15 hours per week in lectures and on-campus seminars. This is in addition to independent study, and there may be additional guided learning activities during certain weeks. The exact distribution of these hours will vary depending on your course and module choices.

Part-time programmes

Part-time students will have fewer weekly on-campus hours compared to full-time students. This reduction is proportional to the number of modules you're enrolled in.

Timetable availability

Complete timetables are usually released shortly before the start of your programme. This timing is necessary to ensure that we accommodate all course requirements and that rooms are allocated based on the number of students likely to enrol on each programme. We aim to provide these timetables as early as possible, to assist you in your planning.

As your induction week approaches, you will be sent more information about your timetable via email, and you will be able to access your timetable by logging into MyAstonPortal. For any further queries or information regarding your timetable, you can reach out to your programme director or the Student Support team.

Online/distance learning programmes

The above information also applies to students enrolled in online/distance learning programmes. Please note that both full-time and part-time distance learning students are still required to attend scheduled synchronous learning sessions.
