BSc (Hons) Mathematics

Mathematics offers a principled, logical, and quantitative perspective of the world around us. From mathematical modelling of air flow and epidemic spreading, through medical diagnosis and power-grid control to investment banking and self-driving cars – mathematics is fundamental to many cutting-edge technologies.

Career prospects
The course has been specifically designed, with industry input, to meet the huge demand for skilled maths graduates in finance and data analysis.You could choose employment in a broad range of positions, for instance in research and development teams as part of a large company or in start-ups, as trainee analysts and consultants. Alternatively, you may choose to continue your training at MSc and PhD level, or pursue a teaching career. Our graduates have gone into roles in a variety of sectors including finance, IT, education and consultancy with large companies such as Virgin Media, Accenture, Fujitsu, IBM and GCHQ.

What you will learn

Driven by the needs of industry and individuals, our course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of key mathematical concepts and an ability to critically analyse these, alongside the opportunity to specialise in areas of mathematics that interest you.

First year

In the first year you will cover essential topics, building on A-Level knowledge, and ensuring a strong foundation. The course emphasises mathematical rigor, equipping you with the necessary skills and mindset for advanced mathematical studies.

Second year

During your second year, you will focus on specialised modules. You will explore advanced topics such as abstract algebra, real analysis, and differential equations. This in-depth study enhances mathematical understanding and will prepare you for advanced mathematical concepts in the following years.

Placement year

This course offers a placement year where students can gain valuable real-world experience. Supported by our exceptional Careers and Placements team, students secure placements in renowned companies, applying mathematical knowledge in practical settings. This experience enhances employability, develops professional skills, and invaluable industry connections, setting you on a path to success upon graduation.

Final year

For your final year you will combine your knowledge acquired during first, second, and placement years. You will have the opportunity to specialise in an area of interest. Through a range of elective modules, you can tailor your studies to focus on specific branches of mathematics such as number theory, optimisation, data analysis, or mathematical modelling. This specialisation will allow you to deepen your understanding and expertise in your chosen field, preparing you for future career paths aligned with tyour assions and strengths.

Facilities

You will have access to a range of facilities that will support your academic and personal development. BBB, to include A level Maths at minimum grade B (with an EPQ at grade B)

Contextual offers

Aston Ready is our contextual offer scheme that could reduce your undergraduate offer by one or two grades. Assessed at the point of application, there are no additional forms to fill in.

Contextual offer criteria

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma and National Extended Diploma (any subject): DDM plus 1 A-Level in Mathematics at minimum grade B.
1 BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate or Subsidiary Diploma (any subject): M, plus 2 A-levels at grade AB. This must include A-level Mathematics at grade A.
2 BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificates or Subsidiary Diplomas (any subjects): DM, plus A-level Mathematics at grade A.
BTEC Level 3 National Diploma and Diploma (any subject): DM, plus A-level Mathematics at grade A.
BTEC Level 3 Foundation or 90 credits Diploma (any subject): DM, plus 2 A-levels at grade AB. This must include A-level Mathematics at grade A.
Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering with an overall grade of Distinction, plus A-level Mathematics at grade A.
The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering is not accepted, please see our foundation programme for an alternative route.
Certificate/ National Certificate Level 3: Not accepted.

32 overall points with 6, 5, 5 in Higher Level subjects including a 6 in Higher Level Mathematics and grade 5 in Standard Level English.

We accept the QAA-recognised Access Diploma which must consist of at least 24 Distinctions and 21 Merits at level 3; including at least 15 credits in Mathematics units.

Please note that we do not accept the English and Maths components within the Access qualification and you must meet the GCSE entry requirement.

T Levels are not currently accepted as an entry requirement for this course.

You may be able to access this course via our foundation programme route.

Additionally to our Level 3 requirement each applicant must meet a GCSE (level 2) requirements:

Non-standard qualifications

Degree

Year 1 entry: We may consider applicants for year 1 entry who are undertaking a 1st year degree elsewhere. You must meet the GCSEs and A level (or equivalent Level 3) requirements as listed. In order to be considered you will need to submit a UCAS application as we do not accept direct applications and this must include an academic reference from your current institution.

Year 2 entry: Please note that second-year transfers are not part of the standard admissions process and is up to the discretion of the admissions team and tutor. Applications are only considered if there is space in that year of the programme.
Typically, applicants for second-year entry must meet the GCSEs and A level (or equivalent) requirements as listed. Alongside this you must have successfully passed (or be expected to pass) your first year with 120 credits on an equivalent programme at another recognised university with very similar module content.

The equivalency of the programme is reviewed by the Admissions Tutor and you will be required to provide an official copy of the programme specification of this. In order to be considered you will need to submit a UCAS application as we do not accept direct applications and this must include an academic reference from your current institution.

Year 3: We will not be able to consider any application for Year 3.

International students

International students can enter at Year 2 of this course having completed an undergraduate year one programme at the required academic level with approved teaching partners ONCAMPUS Aston or NCUK.

UK students (Home Undergraduate):

On 20 October 2025, the Government announced that tuition fees in England will be increased annually in line with inflation, starting in 2026. The Government have since confirmed that it intends to determine the inflation-linked increase using the Retail Price Index, although this is subject to parliamentary approval.

According to the Department for Education’s Policy Paper published on 26 November, the annual tuition fee for the Programme commencing in the academic year 2026/7 is expected to be £9,790, subject to parliamentary approval. If you are holding an offer at Aston, when the annual tuition fee for your Programme for the 2026/27 academic year has been confirmed, we will write to update you. We will also provide as much information as we can about the inflation-linked increase in tuition fees for future academic years.

The duration of your programme is set out at the top of this webpage and you will be responsible for the payment of an annual tuition fee in each of these years. The University reserves the right to increase tuition fees annually in accordance with its Terms and Conditions and subject at all times to the maximum tuition fee caps set by Government from time to time. Assessment

Students in the first year will be assessed through a variety of methods including group portfolios, weekly online quizzes, exams, excel tasks, and both group and individual programming tasks. In the second year, assessment methods include poster presentations and group presentations. Subsequently, assessments consist of a mix of coursework, applying knowledge, and closed-book on-campus exams testing theoretical understanding.

What if I don't meet the entry requirements?

If you are passionate about this course but do not meet the standard grades, or if you are missing essential subjects like Mathematics or Physics, you may be eligible for our Foundation Programme. Managed by the Aston Foundation Centre, this one-year course is designed to bridge the gap between your current qualifications and undergraduate study. You will be fully integrated into university life from day one, and successful completion guarantees your progression onto Year 1 of this degree.
