Frequently Asked Questions

How is this course different from Biomedical Science?

Our Biomedicine degree is ideal for students who are fascinated by the human body and want to explore its biology in both health and disease. You’ll study the human body at the molecular, cellular, organ, system and whole-body levels, gaining a broad understanding of human biology. In contrast, our Biomedical Science degree has a larger clinical focus and is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). The Biomedical Science degree is tailored for those students who wish to become a Biomedical Scientist, working in hospital diagnostic laboratories within the NHS.

Another key difference is the greater flexibility built into our Biomedicine programme. In your final year, you’ll have the opportunity to tailor your degree by choosing several optional modules aligned with your own interests, allowing you to study more of what you enjoy. Students on the Biomedical Science programme are only able to choose one optional module in their final year.

Can I transfer onto Biomedical Science/Biochemistry/Medicine after year 1?

The first year of our three Bioscience courses (Biomedicine, Biomedical Science and Biochemistry) are mostly similar, with students largely being taught together. Students who join us enrolled on one biosciences programme are eligible to transfer to another bioscience programme within the first few weeks of term with no questions asked. Students can transfer from one bioscience programme to another at the end of year 1. However, students wishing to transfer at the end of year 1 to Biomedical Science, will be required to complete a biomedical science specific assignment which is a component fail, meaning students must pass this element in order to pass the academic year.

Students enrolled on one of our three bioscience programmes (Biomedicine, Biomedical Science and Biochemistry) are not eligible to transfer to Medicine after year 1 of their undergraduate degree.

Can I progress onto Medicine after Graduating?

Yes, many of our bioscience graduates at Aston go on to study graduate entry medicine across the country.

What accreditation does the course have?

Our Biomedicine BSc course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB). This means that when you graduate, you’ll have met a defined set of learning outcomes, including subject knowledge, technical ability and transferable skills. Our MBiol Biomedicine degree holds Advanced Degree Accreditation by the RSB.

What careers can I expect to move into?

After graduating, you will have all you need (including optional industry experience) to move into

  • research
  • health
  • welfare
  • biological industries in roles such as laboratory technician and research assistant.

Why should international students choose Aston University?

Study at Aston University and you will be part of a multi-cultural community located at the heart of the dynamic city of Birmingham. Our courses are practical, inspired by industry and many have internationally recognised accreditations. Renowned for our employability prospects and connections to business and industry, we provide outstanding career support, advice and placement opportunities.
