Course overview

The Medical Biosciences (Singapore) BSc (Hons) is delivered through a partnership between Aston University and EAIM, Singapore. It prepares you for a career in biomedical science or research within the allied health professions, combining academic knowledge with practical and professional skills.

You’ll study key subjects that underpin human health and disease, while exploring the vital role biomedical scientists play in modern healthcare through innovation and scientific expertise. You'll also complete your own research project, gaining hands-on experience and real-world insight that will support your progression into a career that improves and transforms lives.

This is a full 24-month top-up programme. 12 month and 18 month top-up programmes are also available for the right candidates with prior learning.

Course outline

All students joining the course will receive RPL credit for stage I based on previous qualifications and experience allowing direct entry into stage 2.

Stage 2 learning outcomes:

Integrate molecular knowledge to explain disease states.
Explain how physiological homeostatis is achieved or disrupted with reference to hormal systems.
Explain the basic principles of adaptive immunity and diseases associated with its dysfunction and how pathogens interact with the immune system.
Explain the role that cell signallinn plays in life processes.
Select appropriate experimental approaches and test hypotheses including the application of statistical tests.
Integrate an understanding of the contributions of core biomedical disciplines (Haematology, medical biochemistry and cellular pathology) to patient care.
Integrate an understanding of clinical genetics with an understanding of specific human diseases.
Reflect on skills acquired and needed relevant to the pursuit of employment.

Final stage (Stage F) learning outcomes:

Critically review scientific literature.
Create and test hypotheses using appropriate methodologies.
Gather, analyse and interpret data from studies.
Critically reflect on their own research and development to identify pathways for improvement.
Communicate effectively through a variety of media to a range of audiences.
Work within health and safety and ethical regulations within a research environment.
Apply the foundations of microbiology and immunology to the understanding and treatment of human disease including inflammation.
Critically reflect on the enhancement of patient care and the importance of codes and acts in Biomedical Science and develop employability skills.

Stage F (Final stage of the full programme)

Module Title	Credits
Block 1: Mechanisms of Pathology This module will provide a broad overview of the factors that cause pathology in disease. You will gain an understanding of the principles underlying pathology of a variety of diseases. This module will also develop your knowledge of how the immune system responds to infection or damage, in terms of beneficial and detrimental effects. You will also gain an understanding of the variety of pathogens and mechanisms that cause disease.	30
Block 2: Cell Signalling and Physiology This module will give you an in-depth understanding of the physiological processes that regulate homeostasis by which the human body maintains a relatively constant internal environment and the hormonal signalling pathways underpinning this.	30
Block 3: Clinical Genetics and Human Disease You will develop a framework for understanding clinical generics and experience in applying it to human disease and explore disease mechanisms. You will also develop key research skills that are relevant to biomedical scientists which will help to enhance your employability.	30
Block 4: Clinical Sciences Develop knowledge of the prevention, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease is heavily dependent upon the results generated in diagnostic pathology laboratories. This module contains core material which directly reflects the competency required to practice as Biomedical Scientist. It aims to provide an overview of the three main pathology disciplines; Haematology & Transfusion Science, Clinical Biochemistry and Cellular Pathology. In doing this, the module will provide an overview haematological systems, biochemical processes and cells and tissues in health, as well as discuss the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of haematological, biochemical and pathological disorders.	30

You will join the programe at the final stage (Stage F) of the full programme and will study blocks 5-8 of the full programme, and study the following core modules:

Block 5: Cancer Biology To provide an enhanced understanding of the biology of cancer including its nomenclature, causes, metastasis and the basis for conventional and novel therapies and development of resistance.	15
Block 5: Research Project Preparation The research project will provide you with an opportunity to prepare for an individual research project where you will gain in-depth knowledge of a specific biosciences-related area and provide you with good experience in practical techniques relevant to the area of biosciences. You'll gain an indepth knowledge of a biosciences-related area, enabling you to experience of practical techniques relevant to biosciences, and prepare you to undertake an individual research project.	15
Block 6: Professional Development for Biomedical Scientists You will develop a range of research and translational skills that will equip you to undertake scientific careers and demonstrate professional behaviour.	30
Block 7: Clinical and Food Microbiology You'll develop an overview of microbiology and infectious disease within clinical and food and hygiene settings, giving you an understanding of the biomedical scientist in the isolation of pathogens. You'll also develop your awareness of antimicrobial resistances (AMR) within a range of communities through public engagement.	15
Block 7: Immunology and Inflammation The aim of this module is to provide advanced theoretical knowledge of the role of the immune system in health and disease.	15
Block 8: Research Project The research project will provide you with the experience of generating, selecting, analysing, interpreting, and presenting scientific data.	30

Entry requirements

Entry will be to start of stage 2 and will be via recognised prior learning of an approved programme of study at Diploma level. Students will normally require a minimum 2.0 GPA in an approved diploma, and a GCSE in English at level C or above.

Students without an appropriate GCSE qualification in English will require an English language qualification equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.5, with no one band below 6.0. The EAIM placement test which is considered an IELTS 6.5 equivalent.

Students will normally be in employment in a relevant setting.

For International students: The International students fee is a fixed annual fee for the duration of the Programme, except whilst on placement when a placement year fee applies.

Assessment

Assessment is through a range of methods, such as coursework, and an end of study block delivery. Exams generally take the format of an unseen essay, short answer, and multiple-choice questions in silico practical assessments.
