A Freedom of Information (FOI) request is when an individual asks for a piece of information from a public body such as the University.

You can ask for any information the University holds that is suitable for the public to see. The right covers recorded information - emails, printed or handwritten documents, images, video, and audio recordings.

If you cannot find the information in our Publication Scheme, you can make a request by:

  • Email to foi_requests@aston.ac.uk
  • Post to
Freedom of Information Officer, Legal & Governance,
    Aston University,
    Birmingham
    B4 7ET
    UK

Your request must include:

  • your real name
  • an address for correspondence (email address is sufficient).

We will acknowledge your request and if it is unclear, we will ask for more information.

The University will reply within 20 working days from the date that your request is received and verified. Where we think an exemption may apply and we need extra time to consider the balance of the public interest in disclosing the information, the Freedom of Information Act 2000 allows an extra 20 working days to respond. We will let you know if we intend to make use of this extension.

We will provide the information unless there is an exemption. You can read more about exemptions on the Information Commissioner's website.

If you are unhappy about our response, you can ask the University to review it. If you remain dissatisfied after the review, you can appeal to the Information Commissioner. An appeal is free of charge.

We will keep records of our FOI correspondence with you. We do this to meet our legal obligations, to check compliance, and to monitor demand. Our Privacy Notice is available on request.
