Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training

The EPSRC and BBSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Negative Emission Technologies for Net Zero (CDT in Net2Zero) is an equal partnership between Aston University (lead), University of Nottingham, Queen’s University Belfast, and University of Warwick. Through cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary collaboration, this CDT aims to tackle global challenges related to climate change and sustainability. 

Our four-year doctoral programme is training the next generation of research leaders tasked to remove greenhouse gases from the environment.  The CDT in Net2Zero focuses on the use of biomass to replace fossil fuels and removal (or capture) of CO2 from the atmosphere, with the potential to create new sources of fuels and chemicals. The centre’s expertise covers Direct Air Capture and CO2 Storage (DACCS), CO2 utilisation, biochar synthesis and utilisation, biomass transition to materials and chemicals, and biomass to energy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) etc.

Through our research training programme, you will be able to:

Overview and Background 
An exciting opportunity is available for a talented and motivated PhD candidate to support the development of an advanced low emission PVC recycling technology.

Plastics production is responsible for around 10% of global CO2 emissions.  With less than 10% of plastics recycled and exponential growth in plastics production, efficient plastics recycling strategies are urgently required to reduce carbon emissions and minimise the environmental and societal impacts of plastics waste.  Microwave technology has the potential to recycle plastics extremely efficiently due to rapid and targeted heating.  Coupled with the fact that microwaves can be renewably powered, unlike fossil-based conventional heating processes, microwave heating has huge potential as a low CO2 emission plastic recycling solution.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a durable and versatile thermoplastic polymer, and the world’s third most produced synthetic plastic.  PVC contains chlorine and additives such as phthalates, which lead to significant environmental challenges in the development of safe and sustainable recycling processes.  Halocycle are a UK-based advanced plastic recycling technology company who have developed an innovate microwave technology to selectively remove chlorine and other harmful components from PVC and recycle it into valuable materials and chemicals.  They have won several awards for the technology, including KPMG UK Tech Innovator 2024.

The PhD project will support the development of Halocycle’s PVC recycling process by carrying out a detailed study of the effect of microwave processing parameters on the product stream distribution and characteristics, with a particular emphasis on upgrading them into valuable products for integration into the circular economy.  The PhD student will have access to industrially relevant amounts of process products from Halocycle’s continuous pilot scale facility, aswell as gain first-hand experience running and optimising the plant as part of the industrial placement.

Person specification

The successful candidate will have:

  • Strong skills in chemical engineering and analytical chemistry or related disciplines
  • Proven ability to work in a team
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Knowledge and understanding of safety procedures and an outstanding safety record

The successful applicant should have been awarded, or expect to achieve, a Master's degree in a relevant subject with a 60% or higher weighted average and/or a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or an equivalent qualification from an overseas institution) in a relevant subject.
